Green Cross Code droid that starred in iconic ’80s road safety TV commercials is for sale
The Green Cross Code droid that was used in road safety TV commercials starring Star Wars actor David Prowse went on sale 40 years later.
The green-and-white robot was gifted to the late British actor, who played Darth Vader in Star Wars, after filming of public service videos ended in the early 1980s.
Mr Prowse, who played the role of Green Cross Code Man, kept the R2D2-type machine in his garden shed where it lay abandoned for the next three decades.
He ordered the 50-inch-tall robot to be restored to its perfect working order by engineer and prop maker Mark Enright in 2006.
It has since been serviced by Mr. Enright, who built and operated the R2D2 in the 2015 Star Wars movie The Force Awakens.
Mr Prowse passed away a year ago at the age of 85 and his family sells various items related to his film and television career.
The radio controlled robot used in production is in perfect working order, including a movable head and an illuminated chest section.
The fiberglass droid is being sold by East Bristol Auctions for around £ 8,000.
A spokesperson for the auction house said: “Such was the popularity of Star Wars and the connection between Prowse and the franchise, it was decided that Green Cross Man should have an auxiliary robot and therefore Droid was born in the public information films in the early 1980s.
