A lecturer got a red face after uploading a video to a shared portal showing herself calling the students “absolute idiots.”
In the video, senior professor Dr Helen McCarthy complains to colleagues at Cardiff University about a student sharing a petition during her lecture.
She said the student “pissed me off” and joked that there was a “uprising”.
The clip was accidentally recorded and uploaded to the student portal with Cardiff University bioscience students finding it among lecture tapes and sharing it widely.
Dr McCarthy said: “It pissed me off yesterday. I hadn’t even started my lecture and [student] posted a chat notice for my conference with a petition on the website stating that they were going to protest the four hour review period and that there was no safety net policy.
Exam safety nets were used by universities last summer amid the coronavirus pandemic and ensured that low scores on a test did not lower a student’s average mark.
Dr McCarthy was also responding to another speaker on the call who said she had received an email stating that the students in the module were “incredibly stressed” due to the fact that they only had four hours. for their review.
Referring to complaints from students about the lack of a safety net this year compared to last year, she added: “This is what happens, you give them a safety net and all of a sudden, you take it off and they’re like “oh my god”.
“Well the students graduated for hundreds of years without the bloody safety net policy, how do you think we all got here?” “
Dr McCarthy also joked that “there is an uprising” among the students.
When another speaker on the call suggests fears about the safety net and exam hours may be the reason for recent absences, Dr. McCarthy responds, “What are they doing? Demonstrate against their absence? Idiots, absolute idiots’.

She also talked about trying to remove the student’s comment before posting it herself in the chat, asking other students not to respond and calling the situation “ridiculous.”
In a message to the director of the year, a representative for the students said: “The students certainly feel that they are upset and have lost confidence in Dr. McCarthy, the extenuating circumstances procedure, and possibly the school and university as a whole in some cases.
“Dr. McCarthy is one of the key figures in the granting of mitigating circumstances within this faculty, according to the students.
“These comments really not only downplay the hardships students are going through as a whole, but are also distressing for people who may have missed classes or didn’t do their best due to the personal circumstances surrounding the pandemic. “
Cardiff University has since apologized for the comments made by the speaker and said they did not reflect the views of the university.
A Cardiff University spokesperson said: “We are aware of any such comments. Any such comments do not represent the official view of the University or School and we apologize for any breaches that was caused.
“We encourage any student who is having difficulty in their studies to access the support and advice available at school and university level.
“We are investigating and it would be inappropriate to comment further until our investigations are completed.”
